Tell me if this sounds like you:

👉🏻 You sometimes struggle with getting what you see in your head onto the page.

👉🏻 You’ve got a troublesome scene that just isn’t coming together and you don’t know why.

👉🏻 You want to make sure your readers can  truly lose themselves in your story.

👉🏻 You want to push your scene crafting to the next level.

👉🏻 You need practical help and guidance so you aren’t endlessly wondering, “Is my scene as good as it could be?”

👉🏻 You want an effective way to practice writing scenes, and get feedback from an expert!

Good news!

I help my clients with those same problems every single day.

And if you’re like any of them, you’ve probably made
some of the same mistakes.

Mistakes like…

Mistake #1:

Not fully envisioning the space/setting for your important scene, and making your characters feel disembodied, or as if they’re moving around arbitrarily.

Fix:

Learn how to step off the page and ask the important questions before you put your characters in place.

Mistake #2:

Forgetting that what happened BEFORE the scene, what frame of mind your characters are in, affects them in the scene you’re writing.

Fix:

Do some scene-specific character work to get inside their minds and hearts, so their actions and thoughts are believable in the space.

Mistake #3:

Distancing your reader by using filter words when you don’t even realize it.

Fix:

Be aware, and rewrite without them—some great exercises in this course to make you recognize when you’re pushing your reader out of the scene.

Mistake #4:

Falling back on descriptive dialogue tags and adverbs to convey how characters move and feel in scene.

Fix:

Remember the space itself, and think in terms of body language and interior monologue—loads of tips in the course!

Imagine if…

You could finally have the confidence to say, “This scene is really good.”
You could have a better understanding of the role of scenes in your novel
and how to construct and write them.
You could be confident that all your scenes advance your plot and
deepen your characters.
You could have all of this in a way that you could use over and over again
as you write your stories.

All of that’s possible inside The Character Choreography Course!

Who is this course right for?

Beginning Novelists

You’re raring to go, you know you have a lot to learn, but you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and tackle the challenge of writing effective scenes.

Experienced Authors

Sometimes approaching something differently can help you get through a block, or identify a weakness you missed before. I take lots of workshops and courses myself for just that reason!

Authors stuck in the messy middle!

We’ve all been there. It’s hard to get the perspective you need to see your way forward. By focusing on scenes, this course can help inspire you to keep going!

Basically, this course is for you if…

You’ve just started your manuscript, and you’re struggling with a specific scene.

You’re starting a revision, and want to be able to analyze individual scenes better
to make them more powerful.

You want to up your game on scene writing in general.

You want feedback from a seasoned, multi-published, award-winning author—
without paying thousands for 1:1 coaching.

This course is NOT for you if…

You’d rather trust to your own scene-writing instincts and hope for the best.

You aren’t interested in seeing masterful examples—with analysis—
of different scenes from literature.

You’re in a hurry to get your book out there and don’t want to take the time
to make it as good as it can be.

Hi, I’m Susanne!

I’m an award-winning, multi-published author and an Author Accelerator Certified book coach who works with new and experienced writers on craft, story structure—and anything else they need in order to get their novels out of their heads and onto the page. I’ve helped many authors acheive their dream of writing a novel they can be proud of.

I started trying to write a novel before I knew anything at all about storytelling or scene creation.

My first efforts were…not great!

But I studied, and read, and took workshops, and got great feedback, and I managed to write and publish 14 novels—six of them traditionally.

I wanted to help other authors get there faster than I did, and with more guidance, so I became an Author Accelerator Certified Book Coach, and have been developing my own methods and processes for working with new and experienced authors.

Why I created this course:

I’ve been working as a book coach for five years now, after being certified by Author Accelerator, and I’ve loved every minute of working with my 1:1 clients on their stories. But not everyone can afford this kind of coaching, and I knew there were many more aspiring novelists out there who I could help if I created an online course.

And I developed a system for effectively creating a scene that helps writers look at it differently.

I wanted my long experience as a novelist and my passion for teaching to reach writers who, for one reason or another, couldn’t do 1:1 coaching with me. I believe that everyone who really wants to write a novel can achieve that goal. Not quickly, not easily, but less dauntingly with the scene-building strategies in The Character Choreography Course.

Praise for Susanne Dunlap

The wisest thing I’ve ever done was to recruit Susanne Dunlap to be my book coach. She helped get me out of my rut and writing again. Susanne is a wonderfully intuitive editor, but more importantly, she well understands both the writing and publishing process. I highly recommend her!”

Sandra Gulland, author of the internationally bestselling Josephine B. Trilogy

Susanne Dunlap is a warm, encouraging book coach who emphasizes what is good and special in your work, and then works with you to bring the story into its best and most marketable form. Because she herself is not only an editor but a multi-published and well regarded novelist, she understands what it is like to create something, take it apart, and form it again until it lands on a publisher’s list of acquired books.

Stephanie Cowell, author of CLAUDE & CAMILLE and MARRYING MOZART, American Book Award Winner

Susanne is a joy to work with. She led me from a little glimmer of an idea for a book to a full fledged book proposal—and she did it all with an abundance of insight, good will, and grace. She knows what agents and publishers are looking for—as well as what makes for a truly compelling book—and her feedback is always spot on. I literally could not have done this without her!

Got questions? I’ve got answers!

Q:

I haven’t even started my manuscript. Will I benefit from taking this course?

A:

Yes! Laying the groundwork for effective scene building can really get you off to a good start in your manuscript.

Q:

I have a complete manuscript. Would I still find this course useful?

A:

If you’re starting a revision, taking this course can help you see your scenes in a new way and analyze them for effectiveness, and make sure they’re all advancing your plot and building out your characters.

Q:

How long will it take to do this course?

A:

Because this course is self-paced—and all writers are different and work at different rates—it’s hard to answer that question. Like any good course, what you get from it depends on what you put into it, so be patient and do all the exercises.

Q:

Will this course teach me how to write?

A:

This isn’t technically a writing course. I don’t teach grammar, dialogue, description, and other craft elements. The focus of this course is on the particular skill of building scenes—which is a fundamental writing skill in itself.

Q:

How long will I have access to the course?

A:

All students have lifetime access to all materials in the course, including any future updates.

Q:

How is this course different from other writing courses?

A:

Essentially, this course differs in focusing specifically on building scenes with my proprietary S.P.A. Method. It can easily complement other writing course that focus on other aspects of storytelling.

Q:

What if I start the course and find it’s not for me?

A:

I offer a full refund to anyone who’s completed the exercises in the first module and decides they don’t want to continue. You just have to send me your completed exercises and I’ll take care of it.
